The Chave Móvel Digital (CMD) is the Portuguese solution for electronic authentication and qualified digital signature, provided by the AMA (Agency for Administrative Modernisation). It is based on a mobile phone number linked to the citizen card, protected by a PIN and managed by the holder. The CMD signature is legally equivalent to a handwritten one, under eIDAS, and is recognised across the whole EU.
The CMD is one of the most underestimated technologies in the Portuguese digital ecosystem. Millions of Portuguese have an active CMD and many do not use it out of unawareness. For companies implementing paperless workflows, the CMD is frequently the piece that unlocks adoption — many employees already have it, it requires no additional hardware, and it works via the official app on the phone.
The Document Management platform by INFOS integrates CMD natively. Approval flows that culminate in a signature (contracts, internal authorisations, regulatory validations) use CMD when the customer and the process justify it. Alternatives — citizen card with a reader, dedicated smartcards — coexist for cases where CMD does not apply.
