Bill of Materials BOM

A hierarchical structure describing all the components and raw materials needed to produce a finished article.

Full definition

The Bill of Materials (BOM) is the recipe for an industrial product. It describes, hierarchically, all the components, sub-components and raw materials needed to produce one unit of a finished article, with their respective quantities. For a garment: fabric (m²), threads (m), labels, packaging; for a metal part: sheet (kg), screws, coatings; for footwear: leather, soles, glues, accessories.

The BOM is the basis of multiple processes: costing (how much does the part cost to make?), planning (what do I need to buy and when?), traceability (if a raw-material batch is defective, which finished products used it?), quality (what are the specifications of each component?). Poorly maintained BOMs are a silent source of lost margin.

In Connect@Fashion by INFOS, the BOM is an integral part of the collection's tech pack, with automatic versioning: every change is audited, with evidence of who changed it and why. In the MULTI ERP, the BOM feeds MRP, standard costing and actual costing directly. The variance between standard and actual is where the truth of the operation lives.
