SaaS (Software as a Service) is the software-delivery model where the application is accessible over the Internet by subscription, with no local installation. The provider manages the infrastructure, maintains the software, applies updates, performs backups — the customer uses the application via a browser or mobile app. It is typically paid per user per month, with functionality tiers.
The benefits of SaaS include: fast start-up (minutes versus installation projects), predictable cost (monthly OPEX instead of upfront CAPEX), automatic updates (all customers on the same version, with security patches applied centrally), access from anywhere (especially relevant in hybrid work models). The trade-offs include: less control over the release schedule, dependence on an Internet connection, potential vendor lock-in, and regulatory questions about data location.
